Biography

As a soloist, Torrey has performed with the Bay View Music Festival Orchestra and the University of Washington Wind Ensemble.  She won first place in the University of Washington Flute Celebration Week Collegiate Competition adjudicated by Paula Robison and has been a finalist for the the 2010 and 2009 Don Bushell Concerto Competition with the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra.

Torrey has attended several music festivals including the Rome Festival Orchestra in Italy, the ARIA International Summer Academy (MA), the Bay View Music Festival (MI) and the Music Northwest Chamber Music Camp (WA) where she has been able to study with artists such as Bonita Boyd, Amy Porter, Linda Toote, the Corigliano Quartet, and the Boston Brass.

Torrey has performed under the batons of Frank Battisti and Gerard Schwarz.  She has participated in two Side-by-Side concerts with the University of Washington Symphony Orchestra and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra for performances of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 and Strauss' Ein Heldenleben.  She regularly performs with the Sammamish Symphony Orchestra, Evergreen City Ballet, and Bellevue Opera. 

Torrey was selected to perform on Live by George on 98.1 KING FM and was a soloist at the Grand Opening of Soundbridge at Benaroya Hall.  She has also played with Let Your Music Shine with Lisa and Linda, a concert series for young children.  As an active chamber musician, Torrey is co-founder of the Evergreen Duo with percussionist, Brian Yarkosky.  The Evergreen Duo specializes in Classical, Latin, and Brazilian music and performs at weddings, receptions, and other events around Washington.

Torrey maintains a private teaching studio and also instructs flute students at the Ballard Academy of Music and Dance.  On several occasions, she has been invited to adjudicate the 2010 WMEA Solo and Ensemble Competitions.  Torrey enjoys coaching chamber ensembles and high school or middle school flute sectionals.  She is currently the President of the Seattle Flute Society and has served on the Board of Directors since 2007.  She also enjoyed co-coordinating the 2010 Frank and Lu Horsfall competition sponsored by the Seattle Flute Society.  Torrey earned her Master of Music degree in flute performance at the University of Washington where she studied with Donna Shin.  She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in music at the University of Washington while studying with Felix Skowronek and Sarah Bassingthwaighte.
